Baasrode Shipping Museum Baasrode In the 15th century Baasrode was a very active trade centre along the Scheldt where boats from Antwerp moored on a daily basis. This coming and going of sailboats resulted in a significant shipbulding industry developing locally. In the 19th century the shipbuilding industry reached its peak in Baasrode. In 1972 the last new boat was launched and in 1986 the last shipyard finally closed its doors. In the Shipping Museum, you will find an overview of what happened in shipyards, with old tools, models and plans of the boats that were built there. Behind the museum the shipyard can still be seen as it was left on the last day. This unique shipyard was purchased by the provincial administration of East Flanders, which is to restore it over time.
