Gent The Ghent Barge
From the 17th century onwards, the canal from Ghent to Bruges provided a link between Ghent and the North Sea. From 1623 until the mid-19th century several barges commuted along this canal between Ghent and Bruges. These barge services pulled by horses took six hours to transport passengers from one city to the other. The Ghent Barge is a reconstruction of a historic 18th century canal boat that sailed between both Flemish cities.
This replica was built with traditional crafts by two project teams The first project team, the Scheenschuit from Boom, built the hull and all technial equipment. The second project team, Beeldhouwerscollectief Loods 13 from Gent, created all shipping ornaments, like the uniqe figure head, the iron guard rail and the copper ornaments. Due tot excelent coorperation of the two project teams the De Gent Barge became a paerl of craftmanship ready to sail the inner waters of Flanders.
Practical: The Gentse Barge has its home port in Gent. The boat can be hired for numerous events: corporate receptions, product presentations, press conferences, cultural activities, all kinds of parties... sailing or non-sailing (as venue). In addition to group activities, the Ghent Barge also organises individual tours. For all further information please visit our website www.gentsebarge.be under the section Newsflash.
