Hoogaars Alcyon
"Hoogaarzen" (Zeeland fishing boats) traditionally belong to the most characteristic of fishing boats in the Scheldt estuary. Since they appeared to handle shallows and banks very well, these boats became established from the 17th century as fishing boats on Zeeland waterways. By the mid-20th century, however, the boats no longer met the changing needs of fishery and they disappeared from the waters. Since from the beginning of the 20th century these historic boats became popular as yachts, a small number of original "hoogaarzen" were preserved. This was also the case for the Alcyon. In 1996 the Hoogaars Preservation Foundation bought the boat built in 1928 in Arnemuiden from an Antwerp family. The foundation thereby took another step in its attempts to keep the heritage of Zeeland fishery alive. 1998 saw the enthusiastic beginning of the restoration of the Alcyon in the former joinery works of the De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen. It was completed in June 2001. The 75-year old boat is now one of the 15 remaining sailing examples from the "hoogaars" era. It is possible for small groups (max.10.) to sail into the deep blue sea on the Alcyon from Veere. Under sail across the Veerse Meer and possibly also across the Oosterschelde. Stranded on a sandbank. Contributing together to the Zeeland seafaring heritage.
