Zeeland Maritime MuZEEum
A visit to the Zeeland maritime muZEEum is a fascinating and adventurous journey through the maritime
past and present of Zeeland. Fascinating since muZEEum components are scientifically underpinned. This knowledge is transferred by means of the latest electronic technology.
Adventurous since the collection is made up primarily of VOC wrecks brought to the surface. This will enable you to personally experience maritime history. The muZEEum is divided into four sections; water, work, glory and adventure. Maritime painting takes up a prominent place in the entire muZEEum.
In the water section Zeelanders relate their link to the sea. It is a gripping story of struggle and adventure, of glory and decline. In a multimedia presentation you will see how Zeeland was created and what the whims of the Scheldt can be. In the work section you will see how fishermen, pilots, shipbuilders, dyke builders, dockworkers and lighthouse keepers exercised their trade in the past. What kind of materials did they require and how did they make it happen? The results are related in the glory section. The Zeeland fleet brought prosperity to the Scheldt estuary. This was reflected in, for example, clothing, crockery and smoking goods. The adventure section takes us one step further. For the collective memory of Zeeland preserves memories of naval battles, voyages of discovery and heroic tales. By means of a questionnaire and various games children effortlessly learn more about the maritime world. In addition there are various computer simulations that are interesting for young and old alike.
The MuZEEum is housed in the historic property of wealthy shipowner Cornelis Lampsins, built in 1641. This small mansion is a symbol of the immense riches the sea brought to this land. Climb up to the roof terrace near the tower and for a fleeting moment you will feel like the ruler of the Scheldt estuary: you will enjoy the age-old view of the port of Vlissingen and navigation on the Westerschelde. Just for a while you will believe you are Cornelis Lampsins watching expensive new cargo from faraway colonies bringing goods into his port…
Practical: The muZEEum is open from Monday till Friday from 10 am till 5 pm. On Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 1 pm till 5 pm. January 1 the muZEEum is closed. Admission from € 4,-.
